Why cleaning your makeup brushes is non-negotiable

Bacteria growth on agar plate

If you're investing time into your skincare and makeup routine but skipping brush cleaning, you may be undoing all your hard work.

Makeup brushes collect more than product. They trap oil, dead skin cells, bacteria, and every time you use them that buildup transfers directly back onto your face.

Clean tools are just as important as quality products. Here's why proper brush hygiene isn't optional. It's essential!

THE HIDDEN BACTERIA ON DIRTY MAKEUP BRUSHES

Unwashed brushes create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. When mixed with oils and moisture brushes can harbour microbes that may contribute to breakouts, skin irritation, cogged pores, eye infections and uneven makeup application

Even if your skin looks fine now, buildup affects both your complexion and your results over time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES?

How often you should clean your brushes depends on how often you use them, but you should never neglect them. Cleaning after every use is recommended, but if you find yourself without the time you should be cleaning your foundation, concealer or any other liquid brushes after every use. This is because liquid products create the best environment for bacteria to thrive. Powder brushes can be cleaned a little less often, around one or two times per week.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T CLEAN THEM?

Aside from bacteria, product buildup can affect the way your makeup applies. We all want a flawless finish, but by not cleaning your brushes you may find yourself with patchy foundation and muddy eyeshadow blending.

Makeup brushes are designed to last a long time, but without regular cleaning you run the risk of a shortened lifespan and having to replace your brushes sooner.
